CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD

In unit 3 ("To the limit") we are dealing with the topic "disabilities", so we are watching part of Children of a Lesser God, a 1986 American romantic drama film directed by Randa Haines. The film stars William Hurt and Marlee Matlin, a deaf actress who won an Oscar for this role.

The film tells the story of James, a new speech teacher at a school for the deaf.  His teaching methods are varied, and often amusing. After a short time at the school, he falls for Sarah, a pupil who decided to stay on at the school as a cleaner rather than venture into the big bad world. James wants to teach her to speak, but she is not interested and refuses his help. He persists and a relationship develops between them.
